Development

Our development team is comprised of people who deeply cherish the RPGs of our childhoods.

We began developing Last Dream to be the central element of our decades-running annual RPG Tournament among physics graduates. That is, we started with the sole desire to craft an enduring game that we would personally enjoy.

As Last Dream progressed and over 50 creative individuals became involved, we realized that other people might enjoy our game as well. Now, after investing thousands of collective hours in game development and testing, and after receiving such generous support from the Kickstarter and Steam communities (thank you!!), we present you with Last Dream - the first in a trilogy.

The Last Dream Expansion and Last Dream II are currently in development. Our progress can be viewed here: Last Dream Expansion and here: Last Dream II

This game is a fantastic throwback to classic rpg's. Everything from the depth of the game, to the importance of character development, but as with many classic rpg's this game lacks interesting combat. After a short while combat becomes more of a chore than a gratifying experience. The character interactions, inventory sytem, character leveling, and ingenious dungeon layouts more than make up for this, however. This game really shines in the arena of the completionist. There is just so much to do in the game that even after 12 hours of gameplay, I still hadn't left the first continent. The art is, for the most part, acceptable. The level design for towns is it's strongest aspect. In combat backgrounds and character models tend to repeat themselves ad nauseum. Having choices as to how to play the game (six difficulty settings, encounter frequency, and an option to omit cutscense) really alleviates some of the monotony of combat and adds to the replayablity of the game. The game also boasts two different "New Game" options after beating it the first time. Overall, I would give this game an 8/10.. NOTE: Full disclosure; I am doing some scripting work on Last Dream now. However, I wrote this review as a regular player, well before I knew I would be working on the game. (END NOTE)

This game is mid-range for most things (graphics, story, music, script, map design). Where it really shines, though, is in the mechanics. A "fuzzy" class system (where many abilities are not unique to a given class) combines with an attribute-awarded level system (where you get "points" to spend upon leveling) results in a very flexible, innovative style of gameplay. If you want 4 white mages, for example, you could conceivably make one into a tank. This focus on variety and custom-tailored heroes makes the game a great deal of fun, and the combat (so far ~4 hrs. in) is balanced.

Other aspects of the game at a glance: lots of hidden secrets; some tile-based puzzles; optional encounters; multiple paths to the same objective; and lots of inspiration from classic RPGs (like FFIX's world map treasures). This game takes a solid, if somewhat lackluster, base RPG and layers onto it a masterwork of mechanics and design. Definitely worth your time.. Last Dream is an achiever's game. A racer's game. An explorer's game. Dare I say it, it's almost an eSports RPG. It's the only RPG I've ever seen with leaderboards. How few times can you rest? How few steps can you take? What optional areas have you seen? Can you overlevel? Underlevel? Find every chest? How fast can you beat it?

These are not questions I ask myself when playing a game. I have never thought the words "I wonder if I'm the BEST at Final Fantasy?" because I did not imagine anyone was keeping score.

That said... it hung together well enough even for me. There WAS a plot and taken on its own terms it passed muster. I remembered most of the characters in the ending sprawl of threads. I did have the occasional RPG Maker problem of "There are six different art styles on the screen and it's playing a MIDI remix of Mars by Holst as the battle music, what am I doing here?" but whatever, everyone sees the Matrix code eventually.

I liked this enough that I'm gonna pick up the sequel.. Yes, this is clearly a game made in RPGMaker, which other titles have given a poor reputation, for good reason.

Despite that, there are so many things Last Dream gets right, that I would advocate it being worth $5-10.

1) The character selection is a clear callout to FF1, with designing a party of 4 from 8 very distinct classes. This makes for some thoughtful character development decisions as well a major contribution to improving the replayability of the game.
2) Character development... You have full control over how your level ups improve each individual stat. This does kinda encourage min-maxing, but in a very good way. Even your damage dealers gotta have something to provide defense.
3) The game is not afraid of hiding lots of valuable treasures away for people who want to look for them, in the form of side quests and a very open world map that encourages you to find these locations. This is kinda a double edged sword on balance/difficulty, but the main quest can only be made very easy by beating side quests that likely were much more difficult than the main quest to begin with.
4) The soundtrack is very full of variety and a whole bunch of excellent tracks... Many of which are recognizable by people who have snagged these tracks that are commonly freely available on the internet before. It's cheap, but it really is a solid implementation of doing with minimal resources.
5) Puzzles! In just about every dungeon in the game, there's at least 1 room with a different kind of puzzle that needs to be solved. This puzzle room is free of monster-spawning, and is completely optional, for the sake of getting more loot. For me, they struck a perfect balance between challenging and solveable.
6) Replayability: Learning all the tricks to the all the above ultimately leads to a major design decision the developer made. Lots of support/achievements for speed-running, accomplishing 100% of the side quests (there are a LOT), etc.

Some potential negatives that exist:
1) The game almost encourages you to go ahead and try and break the balance. To some, this is a system that works really well, and to others, well, that's understandable.
2) Pretty obvious reuse of a lot of RPGMaker graphical assets. Given the market for the game, I don't forsee this being much of an issue.
3) At one point of the main quest, you'll probably find yourself doing something that you don't want to do in order for the quest to proceed. (being ambiguous to avoid spoiler alert).. 40 something hours and I'm still going. With multiple character types, you can play and replay several times to try new strategies with different compositions. Very FFIV-ish overworld with lots of exploration and nooks and crannies.

The end game is broken by literal P2W ( with in game currency hahahah), since you can Casino exploit gold, and with gold comes free skill points, items, and all the other things that make the game more simple. It is extremely fun and customizable though. Overall, as for a 2-D throwback, it hits the mark dead on. Forget the RPGM aspect, the game is quality as all hell. 9/10.. Just by description I knew I was going to like it, so when I saw it was on sale I bought it as soon as possible. I am really glad I did because the game is amazing. So far, I've had no issues with the game and doubt that there will be any issues. I can tell I'll be playing this game for a while.. I am a big fan of old school RPGs (I grew up playing all of the Final Fantasy games, starting with the original). This is easily one of the most fun retro RPG games I have played, and definitely the best RPG Maker game I have played. 10/10, can't wait for the expansion and sequel.. This is one of the best RPG's I have ever played. Old school feel but very refined. Great story. Fun gameplay. Lots of options and choices with leveling up and skill upgrades.
Most fun I've had with an RPG in a long time. Highly recommended!. Absolutely amazing, one of the best RpgMaker Games out there.

lots of systems like treasure hunting, fishing, arena, hunters guild, crafting, an unique leveling system which allows you to to assign your stats as you level up(instead of getting auto stats on everything),unique classes that do specific actions like taking shortcuts, stealing from the town without getting into trouble and tamming choc- *cough*moas. oh did i mention that you begin with a full party? straight to the meat.

this game has a lot of content for its price.

if you love JRPGS, like your final fantasies you'll love Last Dream.
