A thriller about an IRA gunman who draws an American family into the crossfire of terrorism. Frankie McGuire is one of the IRA's deadliest assassins. But when he is sent to the U.S. to buy weapons, Frankie is housed with the family of Tom O'Meara, a New York cop who knows nothing about Frankie's real identity. Their surprising friendship, and Tom's growing suspicions, force Frankie to choose between the promise of peace or a lifetime of murder.
One of Northern Ireland's top IRA terrorists, Frankie McGuire, escapes to NY, where he, under the name of Rory Devaney, with support of friendly judge Peter Fitzsimmons, lives in the house of Irish cop Tom O'Meara, who doesn't know who Frankie really is. Rory tries to buy some weapons from dealer Billy Burke, while Tom has moral problems covering up the murder of a suspect by his partner cop Edwin Diaz. The problems arise when Tom begins to suspect something about Rory's identity.
The lead review of this movie is vastly unfair. Just because it is written by some one from Belfast who professes to know it all about such topics doesn't mean what he says is relevant for everybody. The fact is that there are interesting relationships between the characters here, you feel empathy for the terrorist character (Brad Pitt), and you feel the pain of Harrison Ford's NYC cop when he partner is killed. The FBI and BI people are in the movie for about 3 minutes -- how can any conclusions be drawn about them? I personally thought it was a tight thriller and it kept my interest the whole time. Ford and Pitt were excellent in their roles. Pitt, despite what the other bloke said, kept his accent quite well throughout. I am a journalist who looks objectively at such things as film and entertainment, I just thought the top review sold this movie way way short.
Before even reading the news about it. Brad Pitt seemed like he really hated being in this movie. He really put on such a mundane performance and it seemed like he wasn't trying at all. Plus his Irish accent is just plain bland and sounded so forced. And I really can't blame the guy for hating on this movie. Because it really is a waste of time and is a disaster of a drama. Some might give this movie a pass, maybe because of the cast. But I just can't do it, it is way too bland and cardboard to give it a pass. The whole thing was a bore-fest, because the development and build up lacked the emotions to make the ending...Emotional. The plot is so darn hallow, and at times it seemed like bunch of college film students put in the money to make this film. Especially when it comes to the action sequences. If I saw this film, without seeing Brad Pitt's other movies I would have thought the guy was a terrible terrible actor. Harrison Ford at least looked like he was trying. Overall, this isn't worth the watch and I personally think it should have been a thriller with some tension in it. Instead of it being a drama with a awful build up.

3.5/10 The emphasis on character in Rambo scribe Kevin Jarre's screenplay (aided by Vincent Patrick and David Aaron Cohen) gives the film unexpected maturity.
