In a brand new Jumanji adventure, four high school kids discover an old video game console and are drawn into the game's jungle setting, literally becoming the adult avatars they chose. What they discover is that you don't just play Jumanji - you must survive it. To beat the game and return to the real world, they'll have to go on the most dangerous adventure of their lives, discover what Alan Parrish left 20 years ago, and change the way they think about themselves - or they'll be stuck in the game forever, to be played by others without break.
Four teenagers are sucked into a magical video game, and the only way they can escape is to work together to finish the game.
I quite like the first Jumanji film, though it's showing its age these days and so I came to watch this thinking it might be more of the same but updated for new audiences.

Instead, they've changed the core concept quite a lot and although I did enjoy the film in its own right, it doesn't really feel like a Jumanji film and lacks the original's imagination.

The joy of the first film was seeing the magical jungle world spill out from the game into the real world. In this version, the players are sucked into a video game version, for no real reason whatsoever.

But really, the film could have been set around people being sucked into any old game. There was nothing really "jungle" about it. Granted, there's a hippopotamus attack early on, but then it's men on motorbikes (??) as the main protagonists? What's jungle about that?

Again and again the main adversaries the players come up against are human rather than animal. To my mind it's as though the screenplay was written as a stand-alone film and then someone came up with a last-minute idea to pin the Jumanji brand name on to it.

Still, it's an enjoyable enough adventure. I normally can't stand Jack Black but he's fun in this film and actually does a bit of acting. Practically unheard of! And much of the fun is watching adult characters embodying children who are nothing like their avatar selves.

Watch it in its own right and you'll probably enjoy it, but don't watch it with the original in mind as it's really very much a stand-alone film. So...

I totally loved the original Jumanji, can't believe it's over 20 years old! I remember watching the herd of rhino crashing through the town centre and being incredibly impressed with the CGI and all that nonsense, and it was actually touching how Robin Williams' family had suffered after his disappearance. Was a great film and I re-watched it recently in preparation for this sequel and it is still an excellent film.

I really liked this new movie - it's very well made, quite funny and superbly paced. Loved it. If (like me) you've ever played D&D then this is about as close as you'll ever get I suppose. Anyone who has played a Computer game or RPG should love it and let's face it that's quite a big market.

Karen Gillen is particularly good, after such small roles in Guardians of the Galaxy she deserved a more prominent role. Jack Black is excellent and the Dwayne The Rock is, um just the Rock with more asides than usual.

Some awesome CGI and imaginative camera work really made this film for me.

It did deserve a slightly better polish on the script and some of the plot points could have done with a nudge, but on the whole I thought it was great. I'd watch it again.

But now I need a third part when we discover who made the game and why... Or maybe I don't need a prequel at all and sometimes things can just be because that's how things are.

4.5/5 Excellent fun. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle brings audiences back to its classic fictional world with a fun, updated new twist on its well-worn story. So even if some of its subplots and emotional throughlines don’t quite click, the action-packed fun and humor should still make it worth your price of admission.
