For the most part, there isn't much difference. The principle behind the sauna is pretty much the same, no matter where you are. The difference is in the sauna heater, the source of the warmth that is so important to a receiving the sauna's beneficial effects. In a traditional sauna, the heaters warm the air. It's really hot air coming in contact with the skin that warms you and generates the sweat that, in the end, is the real purpose of the sauna. The sweat helps remove toxins from your body by bringing them to the surface through your skin's pores.


Traditional saunas must get very hot to generate a detoxifying sweat. Temperatures above 180 degrees Fahrenheit are common. That kind of heat can put quite a lot of stress on your heart and even cause damage. For this reason, it's always wise to have a doctor check you out before you begin using a sauna. Many people who go to infrared sauna spas, because infrared saunas do not reach such high temperatures. They are typically more than 60 degrees Fahrenheit cooler than a traditional sauna. People use infrared saunas for a variety of benefits. These benefits include detoxification, weight loss, skin improvement, pain relief and a cardiac workout.


You might be surprised at that last reason for visiting infrared sauna spas. How can sitting still give you a cardiac workout? When your body heats to a certain point, it tries to cool itself. Your heart rate increases as part of this effort, just as if you were exercising. In a traditional sauna, this effect might cause your heart to work too hard because the temperature is so high. But in an infrared sauna, the air temperature is lower. Your heart works, but it's a healthy workout. Thirty minutes in an infrared sauna gives you the same cardiac workout as a 30-minute jog.
