I saw this in the theater, back in the day, and I thought it was awesome. The basic story still holds up OK...gotta love it though, if you can access a little latent paranoia. I mean, nowadays people google things but back in the day you had to go to the library and hope it had the book you needed. Back in the day the phone lines were down...now we have cell phones. Suspend disbelief a bit. Pretend there's no wifi and no signal.
Well, I've heard a few things about this film over the years and now I've been able to see it. I definitely enjoyed Warren Oates although I thought Peter Fonda was a bit bland, not doing much with his character. Essentially this is a situation/horror movie on wheels, not totally unlike "The Hills Have Eyes" or "Duel" from around the same time. There is no real supernatural element, but there is a scary cult that is chasing the heroes around in their RV. Now these are the type of heroes who really don't deserve to live past the last frame of the movie, because every time they get a few miles away from the last place they ran into trouble they immediately seem to relax and set themselves up for the next confrontation with the pervasive Satanic cultists who are following them.
Probably the most interesting aspect of the movie for me was the way that these cultists seemed to have invaded every aspect of Middle-American life. It was kind of like "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" in that way -- every person who you might expect to be a stalwart of the good old American way (the town sheriff, the guy running the auto station, etc.) is of course in league with the evil biker guys. This is a paranoia of rural America that makes Fonda's "Easy Rider" seem sort of tame by comparison, but the whole thing of course is so ridiculous that you really can't take it seriously in the way you could take that film.
I couldn't rate it very highly as a film for several reasons -- it's quite predictable, even if some of the stuff that you can predict is stuff like the high speed chases on the highway that you wouldn't want to do without. There's the obligatory horror-movie stuff like the wives going to the library and doing research on Satanism... it seems like in every 60s and 70s horror movie there's that scene where they have to have a PBS moment and impress us all with pictures and stories about the history of cultism or whatever the subject of the film may be. Oates and Fonda are good but they and their wives are pretty uninteresting characters and there's really no drama going on, just a run for their lives. The cultists themselves are pretty bland too except when they're impersonating nosy RV-park neighbors and so forth. But for whatever reason I did enjoy the film a lot and I wouldn't mind watching it again -- I think there's an appeal to the stripped-down nature of the story. This is a very cool drive-in movie, with so much action focused around automobiles and so forth, and you don't see that many of those with good supernatural overtones. I haven't really seen another movie exactly like this one, and the whole production was fairly high in quality.
