Eons after the Gods won their mythic struggle against the Titans, a new evil threatens the land. Mad with power, King Hyperion (Mickey Rourke) has declared war against humanity. Amassing a bloodthirsty army of soldiers disfigured by his own hand, Hyperion has scorched Greece in search of the legendary Epirus Bow, a weapon of unimaginable power forged in the heavens by Ares. Only he who possesses this bow can unleash the Titans, who have been imprisoned deep within the walls of Mount Tartaros since the dawn of time and thirst for revenge. In the king's hands, the bow would rain destruction upon mankind and annihilate the Gods. But ancient law dictates the Gods must not intervene in man's conflict. They remain powerless to stop Hyperion...until a peasant named Theseus (Henry Cavill) comes forth as their only hope. Secretly chosen by Zeus, Theseus must save his people from Hyperion and his hordes. Rallying a band of fellow outsiders - including visionary priestess Phaedra (Freida Pinto) and cunning slave Stavros (Stephen Dorff) - one hero will lead the uprising, or watch his homeland fall into ruin and his Gods vanish into legend.
This movie was just painful to watch. The pain started about ten minutes after a slow beginning, and grew steadily as the end approached. Everything about it was bad.
I mean, I don't mind an interpretation of mythological tales that is a bit liberal, but come on! This entire movie is a lesson on bad film-making: it features two legendary characters - Theseus and Hyperion - taken completely out of their original context, a ridiculous virgin babe-seer that of course ends up being deflowered by the mighty hero, a scenario that doesn't have any sense from beginning to end (I don't want to make a list of the oh so many inconsistencies, because a five-year-old could do it just as easily), extremely bad acting which infuriates me even more since I really liked Henry Cavill's performance in other works, a non-existent setting, catastrophic costumes, action sequences that are just passable - hence the two stars -, sadomasochistic brainless completely underwhelming titans, and gods ...
Well I have to give a special mention to those. A strange mixture of power rangers and golden saints, with the charisma and acting talent of (really bad) soap opera actors, and a fighting style mixing Chinese martial arts and American wrestling. Plus, over the top, a hint at an incestuous relationship between Zeus and Athena, of all goddesses, which doesn't even serve any purpose. I mean, if the rest of the movie was already terrible, in the direct tradition of Clash of the Titans, the depiction of the Greek gods in this one is the nail that closes the coffin.
I wasn't expecting much, to be truthful, but The Immortals managed to disappoint me anyway. Actually, it bored me so much I stopped watching it thrice and had to force myself to go back, but after the climax, I just had to stop. I couldn't even watch the last five minutes of epilogue that closed this mythological failure. Worst movie I've seen this year. When I first saw the trailer to this movie I thought it would be a lame movie that has mythological elements in it like the recent "Clash of the Titans" movie. But this movie I gotta admit is much better with the direction and the gory and bloodiness of it all. The movie is brutal like how mythological movies like this should be. The story isn't anything amazing or anything like that but the cinematography, the violence and the mythological powers that is portrayed in this movie makes it worth a watch. The parts where the gods comes down to intervene or just fight is very cool to watch and is some of the most entertaining parts of the movie. If the story was good as some of the sequences in this movie this could have easily been a must see movie of 2011. But still it's a entertaining flick that I didn't regret forking over few bucks to see in theater.
7.4/10 Immortals is the latest disaster of post-conversion 3-D, a projected spectacle so dark it is literally hard to see. This is an ugly, burlap sack of a film, stitched with jagged seams and overstuffed with computer-generated chintz, gold-lamé leotards and fetishistic headgear.
While it was rated R (for sequences of strong bloody violence, and a scene of sexuality) in the States, the UK make an exception when it comes to censorship. Although a BBFC 18 was available for the uncut version, distributor Universal UK decided that this wouldn't be profitable enough for the British market. Therefore, they decided to cut the film down to a BBFC 15 rating. Unfortunately (and a not so rare occasion by the way), the DVD and Blu-ray contain this censored cut, as well. Different methods were used to tone down the violence. Along with normal cuts, there is one scene where the volume of a gory effect has been reduced and numerous alterations of the blood's colour (black instead of red). It's notable that this mostly affects scenes with fantasy creatures and not humans.
