This is a huge surprise. Even if it has pixelated graphics and a not so well inventory policy it is an amazing game for those dungeons crawler fans that are looking for something to keep them pinned in adventures for many hours. The quests are pretty straightforward but the way you build your parties and move them around the map has something that I cannot point out exactly yet it is addictive. Also, you can do som minor city improvement that adds to the RPG feeling.. So, lately i was playing games similiar to this one, to be exact the Might and Magic 6 to 9. Thats when i stumbled on this game. To be honest, on my first look it seemed to simple for me, like you could not specialize your characters at all. The combat seemed odd to me too and overall my opinion was mostly negative. But i gave it a try and i was positively surprised, it made me stop playing Might and Magic to play this one instead. I have only played about 12 hours, but i can say the dungeon crawling and city building is fun. You can distribute status points for your character how you want it to be and searching for better equipment is satisfying in a way. Also, the combat does feel good i think, its much better than i expected. This game is addicting and i can just recommend it to people who like this genre.. This Game has more depth then i thought at first, i have played for a few hours and am not sure how much longer a "small" world will take to complete but its still fun and hard anof to keep me coming back for more.. This one caught me by surprise. As someone who has been struggling for a while to get into first person dungeon crawlers, I greatly enjoy this game so far. It combines the hard as balls first person dungeoneering rpg elements of games like Wizardry and Grimrock with the open world, city management and infinite adventure of A Valley Without Wind, a game that's also high on my like list. One thing that makes me a bit iffy is the emphasis on having multiple parties at once. In the game's current state, as far as I know, dungeons can only be cleared once, and the enemies never respawn. This means that training up a fresh party can be very difficult depending on how much of the world map you've cleared with your main party, but the thing is, you actually NEED multiple parties, because one of the main "plot" dungeons in the game are special towers that can only be cleared when 2 or more parties enter at once. I'm still new to this game, so I MAY be wrong about enemy respawning, though. Also, the stat system is kinda wonky. The stats for your heroes are based entirely on random dice rolls, and oftentimes this can lead you to have a fighter with horrible attack and defense but great intelligence and willpower, or a mage/cleric with the opposite problem. All in all though, Heroes of a Broken Land shows great promise, and is an incredibly well done experience you should try at least once.. This game is suprisingly fun for how simplistic it is. It starts out fairly slow and seemingly dull, but suddenly you realize that there are all sorts of cool class promotions available, different hero types to recruit, different goals to aim for. It doesn't take long before you get lost in that old school vibe of trying to get better items, more gold, more experience, clearing out increasingly diffiicult dungeons. I can't explain it. If the combat had more complexity and there were a campaign mode it would easily be one of the best games of our time. It feels like a casual Eador for when you just don't want to worry about every little move.. I got this game because it reminded me of one of my all time favorites -- Wizardry. However, Wizardry is almost 40 years old, and this genre of game has come a long way. I did not find Heroes of a Broken land to be engaging on a tactical or strategic level, and the exploration was not satisfying.. Enjoyable old school feeling RPG. It has a lot of the old might and magic feel. The only thing i would ask the developers on the next one is to only run 1 or 2 party's. It becomes time consuming to build 4 or 5 party's of 6 people. I picked it up on sale and don't regret it.
