A young man steals a boat to find his brother, but he and his shipmates become shipwrecked on a mysterious island inhabited by a giant sea monster and a slumbering Godzilla.
Some teenagers want to obtain a boat to find a brother. When they look around a boat without permission, they find a thief who takes them on his escape. They are caught in a storm and arrive at Letchi Island where natives of Infant Island have been enslaved by the terrorist organisation Red Bamboo. Red Bamboo runs a heavy water factory to process a juice which holds off the monster, Ebirah, which otherwise traps them on the island. The young men meet beautiful but tough Daiyo and wake up Godzilla to put an end to the Red Bamboo.
A military regime heads a base on a far away island, away from all and protected by Ebirah, a giant red lobster. Yes, that's right...you heard me...a giant red lobster. Not only that, but the island is also the sanctuary for the inactive, sleeping, dormant, hibernating Godzilla. He must have been sleeping one off or something. Anyway, the lobster's attacks are repelled by a fruit sauce sprayed in the ocean..any trespassers coming through his way unawares are skewered by his claws and eaten. But wait, four men that steal a small yacht and sail across the ocean it seems manage to be washed ashore the island and they get in cahoots with a native girl that flees the military regime that uses the natives of Infant Island(the home of Mothra) for making the tooty fruity repellant. It seems that they stumble across the snoozing lizard and realize the people on the island are involved in nuclear reactors and the like. Of course, we are then treated to the big Godzilla, Ebirah, and man interacting with a guest cameo by a huge flying buzzard of sorts and and a special guest appearance by Mothra, the moth with the most. As an added bonus, we also get the two miniature girls that are devoted to the huge moth and a great native song singing to a dazed and dozed Mothra. This is great, campy fun. It is not one of the best Godzilla films, but certainly not the worst. I cannot think of of many pictures that give so much. The Japanese officer with the red dragon eye patch immediately signaled that lots of fun was to be had. Oh, if you just watch the Godzilla films for their fighting, this film is a bit weak in that area. I mean what do you expect with a giant lobster anyway.
This was obviously made because Toho wanted to discover new plot elements for their kaiju film formula, which was falling into something of a predictable rut (humans fight humans, humans fight monster, monster fights monster, sayonara). But simply limiting the amount of time the monsters appear on screen offers no improvement.

"Sea Monster" is one of the weaker entries in the original Godzilla series. Much of the film is directed as light comedy, a mild satire on the James Bond films. Actually, the comedy works pretty well; it's never knee-slapping laugh-out-loud, but it finds and sustains a level of humor most viewers should find fairly easy to live with.

The monsters here are almost tossed in for deus-ex-machina plot devices, saving the day at the last moment. To be sure, it's amusing to see Godzilla sit around pondering what to do with the woman he's just saved from bad guys, but there really isn't much for him to do here. He zaps a giant vulture, pulls the claws off a lobster and smashes a nuclear power plant - and that's about it. For a minute towards the end, it almost looks like things will get complicated by a battle between Godzilla and Mothra, but this doesn't really amount to much either.

For Godzilla completists, it's a relatively harmless sub-par entry - it certainly doesn't scrape the same bottoms as "Godzilla's Revenge" or "vs. Megalon". But if you are not yet a Big G. fan, this should not be your introduction to the series.

Entertaining fluff, nothing more.
