About This Game

Description

God's Basement is a first-person, narrative-driven, single player horror game. The deeper you explore, the more you remember about your past life, along with the horrors associated with it. Discover the secret to God's Basement and what kind of individuals are sentenced here. Fight the fear seeping into your mind as the horrors of the past come alive through the world around you.

Story

You wake up in a normal, almost monotonous office room, hearing the faint sound of a phone ringing in the next room. The caller is an entity that introduces himself as The Operator, and gives you a set of instructions to follow. The documents around the room imply that you are in the afterlife, a specific version of the afterlife called God's Basement. The Operator keeps instructing you to go deeper and explore the depths of God's Basement, while simultaneously revealing the details of your past life, along with the horrors associated with it.

Features

- A strong focus on atmospheric tension
- Two main environments, a modern office area and a house
- Includes puzzles and riddles with varying difficulty
- Primarily a "Walking-Simulator"
- Emphasizes the unfolding of a story rather than fast paced action-oriented gameplay
- Provides an intense psychological horror experience

Gameplay

God's Basement doesn't have any complicated mechanics. The game doesn't involve any survival, retaliation or "hide and seek" style gameplay. Atmospheric horror elements are emphasized, along with creepy and borderline disturbing imagery. Most of the events in the game are scripted and straightforward although there are puzzles and riddles to be found. This game follows more of a "Walking-Simulator" style of gameplay than an action oriented one. If you're looking for a fast-paced, action-packed survival horror experience, this game probably won't satisfy that need. If you're looking for a slower-paced, narrative-driven experience that puts a strong emphasis on fear, give this game a try. b4d347fde0

1/10 Eggplants. Makes you stack 50 boxes in one level for no goddamn reason. The scariness is minimum. Actually so mad i wrote my first steam review to express my anger.. Overall a very good experience. The PT references can be a bit much though.. 3.5/10

I thought the premise of God's Basement sounded quite interesting - the player navigates a purgatory of sorts, learning what was done to earn your place there. I liked what I saw of the game's environments, although I was partial to the abandoned office over the Grandmother's home. I also enjoyed the sound design, from the ambient environmental effects to the unnerving monotone of "the Operator," who guides you through the game. I looked forward to reading the newspaper clippings and hearing TV/radio reports that provided you with more background on your family.

Unfortunately, I found the act of playing the game to be tremendously tedious. First of all, I was not a fan of the way that you interact with objects. While most games of this type seem to provide you with some sort of dot/crosshair to orient yourself and then highlight the objects that you can interact with as you mouse over them, God's Basement only provides you with a dot/crosshair when you specifically mouse over the objects you can interact with. Perhaps this is meant to lend immersion to the player, but for me this just made it more difficult to interact with the environment. If a dot doesn't appear when I mouse over an object, is it because I'm not looking exactly at the object, or because the object isn't one that I can interact with?

Secondly, I did not like the way that the game progressed. The first time I got stuck in the game (near the beginning), it was because I did not "focus" (zoom in) on a creature that I had located in the crack of a door. I only learned this after consulting the developer's walkthrough, and I didn't even know that I could focus (perhaps I missed this in-game tip) until I consulted the keyboard controls in the options menu. Once I focused on the monster, another door opened (through which I could progress). Later, I got stuck because although I had located and read a post-it note, I hadn't focused on it. Again, once I focused, the scripting kicked in and allowed me to progress. If I wasn't randomly zooming in on objects in each room, I was twiddling my thumbs while waiting for the game's scripting to allow me to progress. Repeatedly, I found myself at a loss as to how to progress, only to consult the developer walkthrough to find an unintuitive and obtuse solution.

Some other reviewers have compared the game to PT, which I played a while back on PS4. There was one series of hallways in the Grandmother's house that did seem somewhat comparable. Although many game journalism sites cite PT as one of the greatest horror experiences in gaming, I personally hated it. I got bored with repeatedly walking through the same hallway, trying to figure out what sort of obtuse nonsense I had to do to progress. Eventually, players crowdsourced the solutions for PT, but for me this seems like the opposite of fun. However, many people loved PT, so perhaps God's Basement just isn't a game for me.

I was intrigued by the story and generally appreciated the game's environments and voice-acting. Unfortunately, I found the moment-to-moment gameplay excruciating.. When I saw the gameplay trailer for this game I was amazed by the detail and atmosphere. A creepy dim-lit office space, something unheard of in horror games. I waited a long time to buy until it went on sale for a price I deemed reasonable. When I first played it the ambience was chilling, the small little "spooks" really got to me, sometimes I would even get scared from my own footsteps lolol.

But overall after playing through the game everything was well crafted except for one thing. I didn't expect God's Basement to be a parallel world based on someone's past memories and experiences, I thought it would be a "Haunted House" type of horror, in a way it still is but the "haunted house" centering around someone's memories and life experience was not what I was looking for. What I was looking for is God's Basement to be a represented as a Purgatory but more terrifying, where you would encounter creepy/scary denizens (such as the grandmother) of the this dim light office of god's basement (because for some reason god wants his basement to look like an office space.). But anyways a direct sequel would not be a good idea imo but instead just add more characters into the game with their own memories and experiences.
(I know I said above that I don't favor the memories and life experiences represented in God's Basement .) but the game has potential to become something more.

P.S. Add more characters don't make another game.. Well designed game hits on all points for me involving an indie horror game!!!. I was pleasantly surprised by this game. It's an interesting story and that atmosphere is perfect. There's a few well timed jump scares, but this game doesn't rely on them to terrorize you. The true terror comes with the cryptic words of the Operator, the music, and your surroundings. This game was so well done, and I hope Erebus does more.. Really nice horror/puzzle game with focus on the story.. Spooky scary "walking simulator" with a very interesting story. Unlike perhaps others in this genre, nothing is left open to interpretation, and things are explained quite plainly to you if you are not able to piece together the story yourself.

For me, this is fine, it's often annoying when things are left "open", not everything needs to be some ambiguous art piece!

There is plenty of tension and spooks throughout, to the point I needed to remove my headphones sometimes just to take a break. This is a very humble first game for the developer, and I think they did a good job! There are some bugs here and there, but you have to go looking for them by doing abnormal things, so they're not obtuse.

All-in-all, a very nice experience with an engaging story, it's not AMAZING by any means, but worth a play if you enjoy this genre!. Incredible job on this. Your choice of music for this game was genius and it fit the atmosphere so well (especially at the last scene, I couldn't think of a better track to fit the player's emotions). You have a great talent for storytelling as well as creating visually stunning atmospheres that draw the player into the story. Jumpscares, in my opinion, are one of the most degenerate acts humanity has come up with, but you executed them well at appropriate times. Scares are better when they're not just quick, loud noises that induce involuntary muscle spasms, and it looks like you knew that. You obviously know how horror should be done. Parts of this legitimately freaked me out. Well done, sir. Well done. And remember; good luck :). Very nice Game I liked it very much and I played it in a Stream and my Viewers liked it too great job hope you do more Games. In Germany we would call you Ehrenbruder (Honor Brother).
