About This Game

Gris is a hopeful young girl lost in her own world, dealing with a painful experience in her life. Her journey through sorrow is manifested in her dress, which grants new abilities to better navigate her faded reality. As the story unfolds, Gris will grow emotionally and see her world in a different way, revealing new paths to explore using her new abilities.

GRIS is a serene and evocative experience, free of danger, frustration or death. Players will explore a meticulously designed world brought to life with delicate art, detailed animation, and an elegant original score. Through the game light puzzles, platforming sequences, and optional skill-based challenges will reveal themselves as more of Gris’s world becomes accessible.

GRIS is an experience with almost no text, only simple control reminders illustrated through universal icons. The game can be enjoyed by anyone regardless of their spoken language. 7ad7b8b382

Pros: It's like playing a painting. Visuals and music are great.

Cons: The game loves wasting your time. Not very fun.

Honestly, i don't think this is a bad game, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. I feel like a quarter of my time was walking extremely slow left or right, literally just holding the control stick in a direction, followed by my eyes glazing over waiting until I got where I was supposed to. The water areas in the game are by far the best parts of the game I thought, most because you move much faster and can do some cool things with the water. Everything else, gameplay wise, is extremely slow ridiculously easy platforming.

One extra side note, if you're going to make a game that is a feast for the eyes, DON'T have loading screens that are completely white. I knew this was a visual game, so I played with the lights off and at night. Not fun getting blinded by a flash of white across the screen every time you load the game up.

If you want a game that's fun, in terms of platforming or puzzle solving, look elsewhere. If you want to walk around and jump in a gorgeous painting for a few hours, go for it.. Gris is a wonderful experience that blends together music, theme, gameplay, and graphics seamlessly into a beautiful work of art. I'm not sure I can accurately describe the emotions I felt when first going through the game, but the closest I can get runs along the words of 'wonder, bewilderment, and curiosity'.

The way that the world intertwines itself into the theme of the game is masterful to say the least. Each detail, each discovery that you come across, each obstacle that you face, they all mean something, and lend their meaning to the overarching story of Gris that gets uncovered as you progress.

While the game is short, its pleasantly potent with each execution of its visual design, world design, and progression. Everything is rock solid, and airtight. New abilities are dished out to the player in consistent, steady waves as you explore each new level, and find ways to use these abilities. Exploration is also rewarded in the way of 'mementos' that you collect throughout the game; which ends in a secret cutscene hidden in the shrine that shows Gris and her mother, together and happy

The story of Gris is not something that I'll detail here, as I believe it's best experienced firsthand, but I will say that the way in which they relate Gris's emotions to actions in the world, both done by her, and experienced by her, is powerful, and the conclusion feels well earned and tremendously satisfying to end the experience that is Gris.

I can't wait to see what Nomada Studios does next, because if it's even half as inspired as Gris, we'll be in for a wonderful treat (not to mention that this is their debut title). Gris is a 10/10 experience. Definitely worth the price tag for a wonderful experience that makes up for what it lacks in replayability with stellar artistic design and writing with subtle world-building.

Overall, A+ (Don't forget to pick up the OST, because wow) . Phenomenal, beautiful, and powerful.

If you enjoy quiet exploration and puzzle games that rely heavily on visuals and music to tell a story, you will enjoy this.. GRIS is one of the best examples of a good art game. It tells you something deep and artistic, but it doesn't stop being a video game. It's a fun little platforming adventure, but the selling point is the atmosphere it creates. The way they tell you the story with the art, music, symbols and mehanics supporting it is quite amazing, and once you realise the story it will be quite a punch. Really good indie game, i would recommend buying it and supporting the devs.. I am just smashed by the level of art in this game!

As a platformer, it is good, it has good mechanics that can surprise you (without spoiling anything). It has its moments. To me, someone who has tried at least a thousand games and studied a good 20k, both video and board games, the platformer is good, there are better platformers but none comes even close to the ankle of Gris when it comes to the quality of art in it as well as the magic of everything working together to bring you as the player into HER world.

But I do not see Gris as a game but as a work of art. The harmony of what you see, hear and feel is perfect and so touching. It slides like water, warms you like a summer breeze and hugs you like a loving mother.

To return to the game itself, unlike many if not all platformers this one is not frustrating. You do not swear at your controller (or mouse+KB) or your hands for missing that combo jump to get where you want. Nor do you get to fight tough ennemies that requires you to figure out what to do and once you do know what it is, it is very difficult to accomplish. You do not get to load and reload a save game twenty times just to get pass a spot. The game is like the work of art, fluid, not too easy, the kind of "a slap on the forehead" puzzles (Duh! Why didn't I see that in the first place). It is entertaining and like I mentioned, it can surprise you.

The only downside is that it is super short, less than 4 hours if you take your time. :'(
Note that I bought the work of art, not the game here. It is way beyond the game itself.

I would create a single expansion that adds locations and maybe one or two creative individual(s) to meet too. Although, not changing the game or the story, just add new locations here and there, maybe dead ends or alternate paths into the game that you can take and if you play again, you can pick the other path giving it a bit of replayability.

The people behind this game are great artists. I congratulate everyone on such a magnificient job. The harmony of sounds, feelings, images, beings, flora, fauna and so on is at such a great level, that I would say your game is 10 years ahead of its time on that point of view. Considering that game designers (especially big companies) and many players focus on how good the graphics are and action, rather than quality and making that game a precious moment in your life. Like a marvelous piece of art in a museum that was done a thousand years ago.

Even a game focusing on mood, ambiance and atmosphere (or rather "aquasphere") like Subnautica is years behind the work done in Gris (its designers did an excellent job too though).

I surely hope we will see more of our heroine in another adventure using the same engine and with all her new tricks she has learned during this story. If you want to know more about what I think and you do not care about spoilers, I will post more on the forums.

Buy it, it is worhty of its price, if not for the game, for the work of art that it is (do not forget the music too).
