CVS HEALTH ANNOUNCED IT would dedicate $10 million to support youth smoking and vape wholesale supply prevention strategies and education.

The company said on Monday that the contribution is part of its five-year $50 million Be The First campaign to "help deliver the nation's first tobacco-free generation. The new commitment for 2019 will be funded through CVS and the CVS Health and Aetna foundations.Dr. Troyen Brennan, the chief medical officer for CVS Health, said in a press release that the "spread of e-cigarette use among youth jeopardizes the progress made in reducing smoking over the last two decades."

By collaborating with experts and aggressively investing in innovative strategies, we believe that we can help reverse this disturbing trend," Brennan said.

The 2018 National Youth Tobacco Survey found that there are 3.6 million middle and high school students who currently use e-cigarettes. This represents an increase from 1.5 million students in 2017. Almost half, 48%, of middle schoolers and 78% of high schoolers report using the devices.

Young people who vape are four times more likely to begin smoking cigarettes later in life, according to Truth Initiative. In 2019, CVS Health will support educational programs to create and distribute educational materials for middle and high school students on the risks of e-cigarette use. A $100,000 grant will be given to the Society of Health and Physical Educators to help distribute educational games from the Yale Center for Health and Learning to schools across the country.

The CVS Health Foundation is also granting $600,000 to support the American Academy of Family Physicians Foundation to support its efforts to address the rising emergence of Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems. Additionally, the Aetna Foundation will work to enhance education and training for children's healthcare professionals.
