A number of fighters are invited to DOA, an invitational martial arts contest. They travel to the tournament island by plane, until they have to jump out mid-flight with parachutes, and then have until sundown to reach the main island to be entered into the tournament. Fighters are then pooled against one another in a knock-out style tournament, with the loser of a battle sent home, and the winner progressing to the subsequent round. The plot revolves around four female fighters who begin as rivals, but subsequently find themselves teaming up against another force.
DOA is a martial arts tournament where the world's best fighters participate in a contest, where combatants faces each other on a mysterious island, where the loser who gets knocked-out will be forced to leave the island and return home. And the winner will be moved on the next match. Three female fighters are chosen to take part in DOA: Christie Allen, a sexy jewel thief, Tina Armstrong, a tough-as-nails pro-wrestler and Kasumi, a Ninja princess. Once arriving on the island after jumping out of their airplane with parachutes, Christie, Tina and Kasumi finds they aren't just fighting for the championship, they find themselves up against Tornament master Donovan, the previous tournament master's teenage daughter Helena Douglas is also taking part in DOA to honor her father's legacy, Kasumi has left her kingdom to find what happened to her brother who mysteriously disappeared at the tournament a year ago, Tina is taking part to prove she isn't a fake and Christie and her lover Maximillian Marsh bid to break into a vault on the island. But Donovan has his own agenda and has other plans for the female fighters.
This movie has a great combination of strip-teasing and martial arts action. Never a dull moment (except maybe for the nanobot thing). Most of the scenes are picturesque - excellent color combos.

If Mortal Kombat had a dark ominous theme, DOA is sunny. The Martial arts choreography is excellent. I guess that would be expected from the director of "The Transporter." Christie and Kazumi are excellent characters. The humor surrounding Tina's character adds spice and removes tension from the mainline theme.

For some reason, I find the Donovan character a bit off. Nevertheless, my eyes were glued on the screen and I couldn't even touch my popcorn. :) Yet another film based on a computer game,DOA:DEAD OR ALIVE has plot,characterisations and dialogue so mind-numbingly rudimentary that experts in non-articulation possessing a single brain cell would feel patronised after it's duration.Since many a computer game-obsessed teenage boy around the world seems to have indeed developed such characteristics in abundance (the joys of this game,and all others have always remained dormant with me),it is with this rather limited demographic group that it is presumably aimed,i.e low social and intelligence skills.

The rest of humanity,however,will ruefully have to accept it's blindingly obvious low non-qualities.The plot is so mundane and under-nourished that it was probably written on the back of a postage stamp cut in half,and the script is comprised of crushingly literal banalities,embarrassing howlers,and pathetic attempts at humorous relief.It is grotesquely generous to describe the characters as even one-dimensional,consisting of the most wooden form of cardboard.This cries out for sub-standard acting performances even at it's pinnacle,and virtually everyone on show does not disappoint,with a comatose Devon Aoki easily being the worst offender.

Corey Yuen,the martial-arts performer turned director doesn't speak English particularly well (though with the cast on board here,he is in good company),and his handling of the dramatic scenes are distressingly hopeless.No actor or actress visible is exempt from Yuen's inept efforts which would even pale beside modest junior school productions.

Yet despite this ocean of incompetence,DOA does have slight aspects in it's favour;it is commendably very short(around 80 minutes),unpretentious (unlike the otherwise superior KILL BILL films,which themselves were not without fault) and briskly paced.There is plenty of female flesh on show,which helps to distract from the weak acting (though to be fair,Aoki,Jamie Pressly et al are slaves to the script's inadequacies).Yuen has employed blatant sexism here,though not explicitly.The female who comes off best here is the unspeakably lovely Holly Valance.I must confess I've always had a soft spot for her,with her faultless figure and almond eyes.Holly looks stunning in her bikini,enough to distract from the dismal role of the thief/assassin Christie which is woefully silly,like every other character on show.Her lover is oddly played by British actor Matthew Marsden,best known in the UK for his role on the TV soap opera CORONATION STREET.(Ms Valance had previously appeared in Aussie soap NEIGHBOURS)

There's a plethora of action sequences which are surprisingly slick and well done,though they lack the stylised beauty of THE MATRIX and CROUCHING TIGER HIDDEN DRAGON,and the brutal conviction of Bruce Lee's best films.(Yuen once acted alongside Lee in FIST OF FURY) And it's very hard to accept any of the girls involved as martial arts experts,further dampening potential excitement during the fight scenes.The CGI effects involved here and elsewhere don't impress that much either,and Yuen falls frequently into that irritating trap of scores of other modern directors of CGI-inspired flourishes,namely speeding up sequences with that awful 'whoosh' amplifying itself on the soundtrack;can all modern directors stop this device now? It's becoming as big a movie cliché as the custard pie in the face.

DOA can be slightly enjoyed (and ridiculed) by those who choose to temporarily remove their brains from the rest of their person for under one and half hours,as long as they remember to replace it back when the film ends;those who have never had a brain to speak of will adore it.But I'd strongly advise the cerebrally challenged to obtain one;you'll come to a far more sensible decision regarding the quality of this film.

RATING:4 and a half out of 10. So insubstantial that it practically evaporates on screen.
