Freelance covert operative Mallory Kane is hired out by her handler to various global entities to perform jobs which governments can't authorize and heads of state would rather not know about. After a mission to rescue a hostage in Barcelona, Mallory is quickly dispatched on another mission to Dublin. When the operation goes awry and Mallory finds she has been double crossed, she needs to use all of her skills, tricks and abilities to escape an international manhunt, make it back to the United States, protect her family, and exact revenge on those that have betrayed her.
A black ops super soldier seeks payback after she is betrayed and set up during a mission.
Another case of "awesome, bad-ass trailer, crappy movie" I'm afraid.

As in, the one scene that's shown in the trailer that I saw before watching this movie ended up being the very best scene in the entire film (i.e. the part where Gina and Fassbender beat the snot out of each other in their hotel room).

Turns out it's very much downhill from that point forward.

First of all, the acting. Pretty awful. She's better than what you'd expect from an MMA fighter, and much prettier, but it's painfully obvious that the rest of the cast is trying to cover her lack of skill as best they can...and on a sidenote, WOW, I haven't seen that many cameos in a while. Too bad they didn't save the movie in the slightest.

The plot is hard to follow, and what parts you do manage to latch on to are boring as hell.

The dialogue is flat, monotonous, unoriginal...just painful. Rehashed spy-movie one-liners every now and then.

Worst of all? The damned music. Before watching the movie, I had no clue the director was the same guy that made Ocean's Eleven. And yet I definitely caught an Ocean's-Eleven-vibe while listening to the music that plays in almost every chase-scene. They just re-used that theme to DEATH in the worst possible moments, ruining most of the supposed action scenes and only adding to the boredom and disbelief.

I expected a dumb yet entirely FUN movie, where a hot chick beats the tar out of a bunch of guys and drives away into the sunset.

Instead I got the bastard child of Ocean's Eleven and a really, really stale spy flick. If your idea of a thriller is all wham-bam-thank-you-mam, cut, cut, cut with music blaring all over the action then this is most definitely not the film for you! If, on the other hand you appreciate superbly filmed sequences shown with few cuts and largely sans music, and a plot which is allowed to develop across the whole of the film, rather than being explained within the first 5 minutes, then again 10 minutes later, then again 20 minutes in etc etc then maybe this is more your cup of char! Gina Carano - apparently a kick-boxing champion who has never acted before - plays the beautiful Mallory - a freelance former marine employed by an agency who carry out missions that Goverments want doing but don't want to be seen to want doing - who, following a seemingly successful mission in Barcelona, finds her world tumbling apart around her ears and believes her employer Kenneth (the ever excellent Ewan McGregor) has doubled crossed her in someway.

All this takes place against backdrops as diverse as the aforementioned Barcelona, Dublin, and New York - all used to great effect, mainly by using not the all-too familiar tourist areas but rather back streets and sides roads etc. The action can be seen as being on the stately side, but this allows for the plot to unravel in an intelligent way - this is a thriller that engages your brain as well as your gut! - and there are more twists and turns than a Beatles song about long and winding roads! Once again Soderbergh has delivered a film that takes a clichéd and formulaic situation and subverted it into something more than a mere thriller. For those with ears to listen and eyes to see there is a lot here to engage with, and will leave you, like me, feeling satisfied and happy with a film that dares to be different, but, as I said at the start, if you simply want a film for which you leave your brain at box office try elsewhere! Paring down narrative and character concerns in favor of a breathtaking application of pure thriller technique, Soderbergh's latest picture is a lean, efficient exercise tossed off with his customary sangfroid and wickedly dry sense of humor.
Mallory Kane (Gina Carano) works for a private company that does operations for which regular government operatives can't be sanctioned. After breaking off her relationship with the company's owner, she is going to leave this company and take a lot of the business with her. Rodrigo (Antonio Banderas) comes into possession of two pieces of knowledge, that Mallory is leaving the company and that a particular dissident is vulnerable. He coordinates a plan to have Mallory abduct the dissident (she thinks she is rescuing him) and then frame her for his murder. This makes his client and the owner of the company happy. Mallory gets wise to this when she finds the dead dissident with her brooch in his hand. At this point she has a fight with Paul (Michael Fassbender) and goes on the run. Mallory makes it to her dad's house and has a final showdown with the company's owner and his guys. Aaron (Channing Tatum) realizes he's been used to chase her down when she is in fact innocent and tries to help. Mallory takes revenge on Rodrigo and Kenneth (Ewan McGregor). Haywire was filmed from an original screenplay by British-American screenwriter Lem Dobbs. The viewer is meant to be in the dark about many things in the first half of the movie, it puts you in the place of the protagonist and let's you better feel what she's going through. You discover the clues as she does, and in the end they spell it all out and fill in the missing pieces using flashbacks so you complete the puzzle just as she does. The confusion is in the editing. The time jumps, scene transitions and overall choppy flow makes the story harder to follow. The whole movie hinges on the acting skills of a Muay Thai fighter instead of the huge cast of "A" list actors. Establishing shots are not made which causes confusion as the viewer tries to figure out where the scene fits within the story. The script doesn't grab the viewer and the movie could benefit from better casting for the roles of Mallory and Aaron. This movie had good intentions but loses the audience by failing to maintain the pace of the story. There are better ways to drop pieces of the puzzle and make the premise more engaging.
