You see most people have been misinformed as to how big of a role fat plays in obesity. Back in the 1980's the U.S. government put out nutritional guidelines that basically said that our diets should mainly consist of rice, cereal, potatoes, pasta, etc. and avoid if possible foods that had a lot of fat and protein in them.
People then got to thinking that fat will make you fat. However Harvard epidemiologist, Walter Willett, discovered through research that there was no connection between those that had lost weight while on a low-fat diet. Instead some studies that lasted a year or more with groups of people revealed that there was actually weight gains on low-fat diets. It was reasoned by Willett that when the body is on a low-fat diet for a long period of time, it will stop losing weight.
One of the reasons for this is that our bodies NEED FAT. Fat is a vital aspect in the delivery of vitamins A, D, E, and K. As these nutrients are stored in fatty tissue and the liver until your body needs them.
Fat also assist with the production of testosterone, which helps activate muscle growth. Fat just like protein also will help control your appetite. It has become apparent over the years that by lessening your fat intake will play no role in helping you in losing body fat. Researchers have found that groups who have been on a high-fat diet experience less muscle loss than those on a high carb diet. They suggested that muscle protein was saved by the higher-fat diet because fatty acids were being harnessed and put to use for energy.
