Can People Really Control Their Own Dreams? "Inception" Explained

Since the release of Inception aMelalunafew weeks ago it has consistently been the most watched movie in America. The movie's focus is on controlling your own dreams, which in the case of Leonardo DiCaprio means dozens of large explosions and close-call chases. Perhaps your dreams would be a bit different, but the movie does bring an important question to the table....can we control our own dreams?

The answer is a bit more complex than "Inception" or Tom Hank's "Vanilla Sky" would make you believe, but some scientists believe that you can at the very least ease bad dreams through self-hypnosis.Sleep research pioneer Rosalind Cartwright released a book this summer called "The Twenty-Four Hour Mind." Cartwright has been studying both the psychological and physical reasons for dreaming for decades. In her quest to find the subconscious meanings of dreams, she has found that soothing night terrors is not very difficult. But it doesn't end with night terrors. Cartwright can easily control the dreams of others by guiding the sleeping mind. And though this doesn't easily translate to DiCaprio's easy personal mind control, it does show that dream control is possible.

The book is not an action-adventure thriller like "Inception." Cartwright outlines her case through the true story of a man who brutally murdered his wife while sleepwalking. She discusses sleep disorders and how much accountability sufferers should hold for their actions while sleeping.

Cartwright believes that dreams are a way for the mind to process things that are happening in real life. When things get too overwhelming, emotions in dreams too anxious, angry, scared, nightmares happen. The brain naturally releases chemicals to cut the worst dreams short (which answers why you never watch yourself fall off that cliff). Though Cartwright and her co-researchers have not figured out how to stop nightmares from happening, they have learned that you can coax a sleeping person into a lucid dream. Once in the lucid state the still-sleeping dreamer is aware of their dream. This awareness gives a dreamer the ability to control their own narratives, getting them out of that deathly snake trap, or finding the room they so desperately seek in that long, long hallway.
