A shady cop finds himself in over his head when he gets caught between Internal Affairs and the city's corrupt mayor.
Detective Han (JUNG Woo-sung), who for years has been secretly doing dirty work for the corrupt mayor Park Sungbae (HWANG Jung-min), is now pressured by a ruthless prosecutor Kim Cha-in (KWAK Do-won) to cooperate in an investigation against the mayor. Feeling trapped, Han persuades his young partner Sunmo (JU Ji-hoon) to take over his work for the mayor, but things start to get tangled in unpredictable ways. As things are getting worse, only the most evil survives in this dog-eat-dog world.
Annam Korea is the backdrop for this noir-esque masterfully shot crime thriller. Caught in a catch 22 of violence and deception, abuse begets abuse in the dog-eat-dog world of Asura: The City of Madness, where corruption is the day to day of cops and politicians.

Asian cinema is on a whole other level in terms of artful violence. Being someone who is pretty hard pressed on maintaining the different cultures in the world, with East Asia as one of my favorite geographies, this offers an interesting view on the whole subject (Asian politics.)

Asura, for those who don't know, is basically a spiritual represention of something similar to the 7 deadly sins found in Western culture. Wrath, pride, envy, insincerity, falseness, boasting, and bellicosity are considered to be the traits for those who carry Asura throughout their lives.

With that being said, politics in general, regardless of culture, tends to be a subject filled with a form of ruthlessness at it's core. Politicians, only become politicians due to an inherent nature. Of course this is just my own opinion based on my personal experiences but I'm sure anyone involved in the racket may understand where I'm coming from.

In regards to the movie, it's basically an inside look on what political corruption entails of. Every man has a price, and a man's lust for power should never be underestimated. Manipulation is the name of of this game, and love, oddly enough, leads the charge. Yes, this is one of those twisted ones.

Rather hard to describe this film in words, but it's compelling in the sense that the acting is nothing less than powerful in this film. Even if you don't speak Korean, it's hard to not be captured by the complexities in the relationships shown.

Only fall was the ending for me, I would've appreciated more of a fairy tale ending, after all, it is just a movie. It was a little harsh, but I guess that's what they were going for in this one, a 120% brutality rating. This decidedly dark and super-violent South Korean crime drama from Kim Sung-su tells a tale so jam-packed with betrayals, double-crosses and alleged authority figures that even the most dedicated of genre buffs may find it too unrelentingly grim and cynical for their tastes.
