Hotline Miami 3: All The Electronic-Music-Artists Have Called In Sick And Now We Have To Use Jazz.

TL;DR: It's bit short for 15 dollars, but the art-style, dynamic music, and level-design will make it worthwhile. If you haven't already liked Hotline Miami very much, I'd rather say you try it out when it's a bit cheaper.

I liked Hotline Miami, this game is very similiar but a bit easier. But HOLEY MOLEY, That art-style! That line-of-sight mechanic, where every wall that would cover the ape's view rises up beyond the screen so that the bird's-eye-view camera is also blcoked by it! The music that reacts to the current gameplay-situation. Not only a sharp cimbel on every kill, but quiet music when you are not spotted, rising music the more enemies detect you, instruments getting louder and quiter depending on what enemy spots you. There's just so much to enhance the gameplay via music.

But for 15 Euros, it's a bit short. It were very fun 3 hours for me, and I don't regret paying the 12,something euros when it was released, but if you haven't been really into Hotlien Miami, I'd recommend waiting for a sale. But for 5 euros\/dollars\/moneys, it's very worth buying just to experience the art-style and the music.. A short, simple, polished top down action experiance, but well worth the price tag.

While it's short the core gameplay is perfect. Slam enemies into things, or other enemies so hard they both instagib. Sometimes it's better to run amok, other times it's better to slow down grab a human shield, or just charge past enemies before they can get a bead on you.

The variety of enemies makes the game more challenging, and the levels, paths, and enemy placement changes every time you die, so it keeps the game from getting stale, and keeping you thinking on your feet.

All of it comes together with a really unique art style, and excellent reactive soundtrack, that gets you in that zen of killing mode.

While there could be more levels, the fact that they're different everytime you play them, kinda makes it a moot point.. Ape Out! is a really fun game that is obviously inspired by Hotline Miami. You may think it's a clone of Hotline, but it does unique things (like the art stlye and fighting) that make it worth your time.

Pros:
- AWESOME art style
- Great jazz score that syncs with the kills and beginning and end of levels
- Different variety of enemies (Machine guns, armored enemies, rocketeers, pyromaniacs, etc.)
- Playing as an ape is something unique and interesting
- Simple, but very very addictive
- Hard mode (look at cons) and a special mode after beating the game (which is very much worth beating the game for)

Cons:
- This is a BIG one. You may be thinking I will say the game is short, (which it CAN be) but there is a hard mode that you unlock after beating each album (Levels are called albums) which can be down right impossible because of the randomness in enemies and their placement. The random enemy variety and placement in the normal game is not a problem because of how much easier the game is on the "softer" difficulty, but in the harder mode, it can be infuriating.
- Can be short if you do not want to replay in hard mode.

Overall, for 15 dollars, you are getting a very fun experience which can give you a good amount of fun. I played the whole game on easy and hard + the extra mode and got 5.3 hours out of this game. Even though the hard mode sucked at points because of its randomness, I still enjoyed and played it through till the end.

If you like Hotline Miami or want to play as an ape in a gruesome top-down arcade game with AMAZING art and music, this is the game for you.

9/10. If Ape Out doesn’t get best soundtrack/sound design of the year, either some amazing soundtracks come out this year or it’s end of days.

It’s not just that the music is good. The improvisational nature of the free jazz percussion which reacts to your input makes it partly a rhythm game. I get further in the game playing by the seat of my pants than by trying to be methodical.

It’s also a lot more fun to play this way.

So yeah, get Ape Out. It’s the best game of the year so far IMO.. Ouch ! Now, I feel all twisted up... ( My thumb too, it seems. :p ). if it was £2 maybe i wouldn't have refunded it. LOL no i defo still would have. This is moderately entertaining for like 10 minutes max. £10 is a joke.. Be an ape. Kill humans. Listen to furious jazz.. Harambe get his revenge

game is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ crazy and great with its style and polish all around, great soundtrack great controls

the game also gets bonus points for having controller support, which i know is a no brainer but in a game like this its great to have that option.

only gripe i have with the game is it can kinda get a little sickening to play for a while, i began to get headaches from the backgrounds and style and it made me a little sick, thats a personal problem i know but thought it was worth mentioning.. I am pretty big on top down action games. Hotline Miami 1 & 2, Mr Shifty, RUINER, the likes. So of course looking at the screenshots and the fairly low price I immediately grab this to get my fix. 1.5 hours later I've completed the game and I can safely say I was more bored & frustrated with it than anything else. Mechanically it is very simple. Hit dudes, grab dudes to make them fire at other dudes and throw dudes. Throwing is the most vital thing but the ape turns so slowly that you're gonna miss and die a whole bunch of times just on account of that. The game feels like it plays most of its cards by chapter 2 and from there it's mostly just an ugly showcase of procedurally generated enemies killing you offscreen or before you can get to them. These kinds of die quick, restart quick games work because you get to learn the layouts and get better at them each time but in this game you just kinda bash your head against the wall until you get through and I just don't think that makes for a good game.. Takes the hotline miami formula and improves on it in pretty much every way. Honestly my favorite top down shooter
Crashes constantly though/

APE OUT 1.2: THE FAIR PLAY UPDATE:
Hey all, this new patch is aimed at making the game more fair.

-Increased size and accuracy of no-spawn zone around starting point
-Removed flamethrowers and bazookas from the harder indoor areas of Fugue and Adrift
-Removed behavior where guards fired extremely quickly when approaching corners with guns aimed
-Prevented guards from shooting too quickly when grabbed (and hitting the player in some cases)
-Slightly increased machine gun guard's reaction time (they take longer to react)
-Slightly increased guard reaction time when lights are out (they take longer to react)
-Prevented explosions from chaining through walls
-Flamethrower guards' now must ready their flamethrowers before shooting
-Audio Improvements
-Fix for the game running too fast on some systems
-Fix for fugue ending playing at the wrong time in arcade mode.
-Possible fix for guards sometimes being inside closed containers, and occasionally pushing themselves up against closed doors.
-Possible fix for some crash bugs.

A quick note about leaderboards: as a result of some bugs at launch there were some impossible scores posted to the leaderboard. Thos are all fixed now, and I've gone through and pruned all the outlier scores. I can't tell when the scores were posted, so I don't have a great way of culling. If you guys would prefer I totally cleared the leaderboards let me know in the comments

Thanks for playing!
