About This Game

Alice VR is a story-driven exploration game rich with puzzles and designed to be a singular VR adventure. Game is inspired by the famous Lewis Carroll's novel "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland", taking its characters and themes to a new science-fiction setting. An unexpected malfunction forces your ship’s AI to wake you from the cryo sleep. You have to make an emergency landing on the nearby planet. Your goal there is simple: find enough fuel to escape. This straightforward task gets complicated when you realize that all of the planet’s citizens had disappeared in mysterious circumstances.

Alice VR is a fresh take on the classic adventures of Alice in Wonderland. During your playthrough you'll meet familiar characters such as Cheshire Cat or Mad Hatter, but the unique sci-fi setting will make every encounter a big surprise.

VIRTUAL REALITY

Alice VR works on Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and is also compatible with Razer OSVR. Traditional controllers are supported on Oculus, while both them and motion controllers work on Vive.

The game is designed to be the most comfortable VR experience possible. After a lot of research and discussions with gamers, we've learned how to make the game enjoyable even for players new to VR. We want you to feel relaxed through your entire playthrough.

Alice VR also works on a regular monitor, without a VR headset.

Hardcore Gamer
The planet is filled with trippy touches and striking imagery. There’s an adorable robotic companion who pops up from time to time to offer cryptic advice, and tons of interesting environmental details. (...) People who want to explore a striking new land in a relaxing fashion will be in heaven here. Adding to this are some interesting puzzles. An early one that involved rearranging pieces of a coil to reactivate the ships engine was simple and clever. Traversal puzzles that goof around with gravity are a delight to solve as they force a level of three dimensional thinking that is satisfying to solve.

VR Focus
The world that Carbon Studio has created is a fantastic mix of sci-fi architecture and bizarre dreamlike scenarios. The books inspiration can be seen everywhere, from the mechanical cat that occasionally appears to the out and out absurdly trippy experiences, sharks flying through the sky, menacing black and white forests, tunnels that twist and turn as your viewpoint changes, it’s a visual assault on the senses. Add to that the eerie audio score, and you have quite an engaging mixture.

God is a Geek
With a five hour playthrough it’s one of the longer story-based VR titles, and with monitor support included, you can always experience the wacky world of Alice VR minus the VR. d859598525

I recently took advantage of Greenmangaming's sale over the weekend, and bought 6 games. One of these, unfortunately, was Alice VR.

Apparently this game does not support touch controls. There are at least 6 ways to launch this game, with the majority of them being different ways to play on Oculus. With every method of launching the game, it crashes when you push any button on the touch controllers.

I would just use an Xbox controller, but the Marvel bundle of the Rift doesn't include a controller adapter, and I'm trying not to shill out the money for one right now.

Steam can't refund because it was bought through GMG, and GMG doesn't do refunds. At least I bought it on sale?

Edit: I beat the game, and boy oh boy it is not fun. Walking simulator, barely any story or decision, and literally the only time I've closed my eyes because the game made me sick. Avoid.. Very slow-paced and was the first VR game that I had issues with motion sickness. The game itself looks good but that's about it. Can't reccommend this one, at least on the Vive.

Controls are bad. You walk forward with the trackpad, but it follows your head movement, meaning if you try to look around while walking, you'll just walk into the wall. You can activate strafing in settings and try to walk sideways when looking sideways, but it's still terrible. If you have problems with motion sickness, don't play this. If you don't, it's probably still not enjoyable.

Also, after "waking up" at the beginning, you have to walk somewhere. I got to a door, opened it (even tough the controls aren't explained for Vive, probably uses the Touch button names) and got into a corridor where I was stuck. I couldn't walk to the right, an invisible wall blocked me. The door in front of me made some "error" sound when trying to open, and the same thing happened to the one I just came through.

So yeah, bad controls, got stuck after 5 minutes. No fun.. DO NOT BUY
The game looks great on the store page but the load times are crazy long to the point where u think your PC has Frozen and the game looks like it's running off intergrated graphics it's terrible, I also have a more than capable PC for vr so this shouldn't be happening, I'll be leaving this review up until the devs contact me or I'll just get a refund. I thought the idea of a sci-fi version of Alice in Wonderlands sounded like a very interesting concept but what got made was just average. Not bad mind you, just average. From the graphics, performance, options, puzzles, story, I can think of much worse games but can also think of much better.

For starters outside of mentioning of characters names from the Alice in Wonderland universe you never actually get to meet any of them. The story also just kind of ends without any real finale. It isn't even a case of being setup for a sequel so much as it just ends with no real resolution. Throughout the game it seems to allude to a grand conspiracy or secret that will be revealed but nothing ever is. It seems to set up a much bigger payoff that never happens. You also get a hint of a moral dilemma when you have the option of getting power for your space ship but at the expense of the planet you are getting it from. No consequences for your actions ever take place though.

The graphics are decent but not great. You won't be thinking at any time that you're playing the next Crysis but they're not an eye sore either. I did notice that a constant issue throughout much of the game was that certain textures, mainly rocks or parts of walls, would flicker very often from their normal color to black and back again. Not game breaking but annoying. I was using the most recent version at the time which is patch 6. Seeing that the last update was over a year ago I doubt these flickering textures will be fixed. The performance overall was good. My usual frame rate was 90-100 FPS but I had drops to the 40's and 50's sometimes for short periods of a few seconds. It was kind of weird as at no point in the game is a lot going on so I am not sure the cause of the drops. The game also never crashed on me once. I played at highest settings at 1920*1080.

There aren't too many options for those who like that sort of thing. The game has no FOV slider, no manual save options, no vsync option, only 4 graphics options. There are 4 settings for AA though and ALT-TAB works without any issues.

The game play itself was pretty simplistic. You have to navigate through puzzles to progress while having the option to take fuel you find lying around. There's really only 3-4 types of puzzles that happen over and over though. More often than not your throwing objects at buttons and shrinking down to reach certain areas. None of it was really challenging or engaging. Again, I didn't have a bad experience but can't bring myself to praise any part of the game.

It took me 3 hours to finish the game. I did not play with a VR headset. I played on Linux.

Overall if you're desperate for a puzzle game give it a go, there is certainly worse games to play and worse ways to spend a few hours but don't expect too much. I give it 6.5/10

And here we are, 12 busy days after the launch and spirits are high. We’ve hit some snags but we’re still working on the game, tweaking its performance and implementing changes requested by you. We are grateful for all of your feedback, both the good and the bad - we learn from it and it helps us make Alice VR a better game for everyone.

At the moment we’re working on adding full teleport movement support for the game and we’ll be improving the performance of Alice on Radeon graphics cards (of course this is not the end of the planned tweaks). This patch should drop after the upcoming weekend but for now we have some glitch fixes for you. Those were included in the big GOG update that brought its version in line with what’s available on Steam. However for GOG we’ve added some new fixes on top of the old fixes, and now we have to bring the Steam version in line with the GOG version. Oh, how the tables have turned.

Whoa, we've just finished implementing all of the voices for the game!

As you probably know, Alice VR is a story-driven experience, so choosing the right voice actor for every character wasn't easy. Especially because there are no typical characters in Alice VR. The game's world is inspired by "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" so everyone there is... a little peculiar.

And so we are very proud to announce that over 20 characters were recorded by Sound Cadence Studios, and the AI, which will lead you from the game, is played by Julie Shields and was recorded by the wonderful guys at Eon Sounds.

Also, if you're not a native English speaker, please remember that Russian, German, French, Spanish and Polish subtitles (and Polish voices!) will also be available in game!

We know it's been a while since the last patch. The devs from Carbon Studio are working on another big one containing fixes, more gameplay, and additional localization. This is still TBA however, although it should come out soon - we'll roll it out as soon as it's ready.

For now we have something somewhat unexpected for you - support for Linux.

In short, if you have a machine running Steam OS, you can enjoy ALICE.

We know that this is not what many of you are waiting for, but it's a start of a new roll-out of content.
