Yet when you look at social media, the privacy war isn'tSmarketo between the big names like Google+ and Facebook. Instead, the privacy war is between the user and the social media networks. Each time there is a change to the design, users must go through and determine how much of their personal information they're willing to share.

Even though you may see a number of claims that Facebook is going to start charging users for access at some future date, the Facebook login page states that it will always be free. If Facebook is always going to be free, the company needs to make money in another way. Advertisements on the sides can bring in some money, but using personal information to target the ads can help bring in even more revenue.

Recently, Facebook has come under fire for sharing even more information. In October, they made changes to how users can share their actions. Instead of selecting whether they want to share each time they do something, users now choose once to share what they're doing.

If you use Facebook, you'll have noticed that you can now see what articles your friends are reading on Yahoo! or the Washington Post website. If you click on one of the links, you'll be asked whether you want to allow Yahoo! to post to your wall. If you choose yes, then every time you read an article on Yahoo!, your Facebook friends will see the title of the article.
