One of the first tests your doctor performs during Vision 20/20 Protocol Review eye exams is a retinoscopy. In this procedure, the doctor dims the lights in the room and asks you to gaze at a large letter board that almost always starts with a large "E". When you look toward the "E", the doctor shines a light in your eye and often will flip a lens filled machine in front of your eye as well. The way the light reflects from your eye tells the doctor information about what, if any, your lens prescription should be.

Next, typically the doctor will perform a refraction test. This is the part of the test that will establish your exact prescription. An instrument is placed in from of your eye and you will be asked to differentiate between a variety of different lens choices. The doctor will probably ask which lenses seem clearer than others. This helps to check your level of astigmatism, if you are farsighted or nearsighted, and will detect any presbyopia.

A glaucoma test is usually done also during your eye exam. This test takes several different forms, but the doctor will probably use the so-called air test. It measures the pressure in your eye, which tells the doctor whether or not you have glaucoma. You will sit in a chair and rest your chin in a chin-rest. You will push your forehead forward against a forehead rest, and as the machine shines a light at your eye, you will feel a small puff of air in yours. It is a painless test, but many people are slightly startled by the puff of air. Others do not even feel it, and only hear the noise that goes with the puff.

An eye exam is not just to tell if you need a prescription. the doctor will also be able to tell other things about your health. Any irregularities in your eye, other than vision are looked for. Warning signs of high blood pressure and diabetes can also be detected. Getting an eye exam can help you see better as well as alert you to any other problems you may be unaware of. All in all, your eye doctor is there to help you. Remember, stay calm- this is one of the few medical exams in life that is completely painless. There is utterly nothing to be afraid of an improved sight to look forward to.
